Rally Mexico proves tough for Suzuki

Mexico was only the second-ever event on gravel for the Suzuki SX4 WRC.

Both Suzuki SX4 WRCs have been forced to retire from the all-gravel Rally Mexico, after a tough day that took its toll on the engines. P-G Andersson had a promising run through the first three stages of the all-gravel event, setting top-eight times on all of them, but then he noticed a loss of power on the way back to service in Leon. The car made it back, but it was decided that he would not restart so that the engine could be returned to the factory for analysis.

Toni Gardemeister also had engine problems through the opening loop of stages, with intermittent throttle response. He started SS4 in the afternoon, but stopped a few kilometres into the stage. The Finn, contesting his 100th world rally in Mexico, was also forced into retirement. The engines of both cars will be flown back to Japan for detailed examination.

Car news – Suzuki SX4 WRC n.11 (Gardemeister), n.12 (Andersson):

The SX4 WRC was competing on only its third full event this season, coming just three weeks after the last rally in Sweden. Although the new Suzuki has scored points on all the rallies it has contested so far this year, the time for testing and development has been short. The demands of Rally Mexico are very specific, with high-altitude stages making the engine work hard on the fast and challenging roads. Mexico was also only the second-ever event on gravel for the Suzuki SX4 WRC, following on from one test event on the Rally Great Britain last year.

P-G Andersson’s car performed well on the opening loop of stages and he returned to service in sixth place: Suzuki’s highest-ever overall placing on a World Rally Championship event. Sadly, his excellent run was not to last as the misfire he experienced on the road section back to service was traced to an engine problem.

Gardemeister also suffered from engine-related issues throughout the opening loop of stages, and the team has resolved to work hard to get to the bottom of these incidents.

Driver news:

Toni Gardemeister: ”Unfortunately my 100th rally has been memorable for the wrong reasons! We didn’t really get a chance to show what we were capable of today as from the first stage the engine was down on power and we just had to try and get through the opening loop. It was a strange problem as sometimes there was power and other times there wasn’t. I’ve got every confidence that the team will find out what the problem is; we have to remember that the car is still very new, and we have a lot of work to do.”

P-G Andersson: ”The fact that we were sixth when we stopped just goes to show the potential of the whole SX4 WRC package. We had a very good run through the morning’s stages, although the suspension set-up was a little too hard. Considering that we had no testing before the event, I think it was really good. Unfortunately we then had an engine problem, and this is something that we need to sort out. Once that is done though, we will be in a good position. I’m quite confident that we could have taken points here.”

Team news:

Nobuhiro Tajima, Suzuki World Rally Team principal: ”I feel so very sorry for both of our drivers, especially Toni who was starting his 100th WRC rally here. This was an incredibly disappointing experience for all of us. As was the case in Monte Carlo and Sweden, we have been stopped by an engine problem and we suspect that it is for a similar reason, although we will only know for sure once we fully examine the cars. It’s clear that we have an issue with the engines, but under the current engine linking regulations we are not permitted to change the engine during or in between the rallies to try and understand the problem. As a new team we want to and we need to improve: but sometimes this is not easy when the rules are not in your favour as a newcomer. It was always going to be tough for us here. Toni did not really have a chance today, but until his retirement P-G was again doing a fantastic job for us. The potential is still very much there and we all have confidence that we will bounce back from this disappointment.”

SUZUKI’S FIRST TIME IN ARGENTINA

Fecha: 2008-03-23 13:29:26

The Suzuki World Rally Team will compete in Rally Argentina for the first time this weekend, having only one previous outing in the event, on the Junior World Rally Championship in 2006 with the Swift. On that occasion, the car won the category but competing with a full works World Rally Car is a completely different story.

Team driver Toni Gardemeister has some previous experience of the rally having competed four times, however, he has not been to Argentina since 2005 where he finished fourth overall, his best result here.

“I have been feeling quite ill the week before the event, so it’s not been a perfect start,” said Gardemeister. “However, I like Argentina very much and I’m looking forward to going back there after a two-year gap. Many of the stages are quite similar, so I’m hoping that this will not be too much of a disadvantage. There are lots of things that can catch people out, so by driving carefully and keeping out of trouble there’s a very good chance of scoring some useful points. Reliability is going to be the key, and there could be some surprises from the weather as well.”

Team-mate P-G Andersson has only competed in the event once in 2005 and this will be only his fourth rally driving the SX4 WRC.

“I’ve only been to Argentina once before, in 2005, so this will be another very big learning experience for me – although I’m getting used to that now. The surfaces are quite specialised, so one of our biggest challenges will be to adapt the car to them quickly. The other big challenge will be staying on the road, as it is a very fast and slippery event in places!”

Suzuki will get new engines from Japan this weekend and Paul Wilding will join the WRC team as team manager. He will be a familiar face in the squad as he has managed the Suzuki Junior World Championship campaign in recent years.

СУЗУКИ В ПАМПАСАХ
Suzuki heads south to the Pampas

Event news:
The Rally Argentina provides a vivid contrast to Rally Mexico, the last round of the World Championship held in South America nearly a month ago. Competitors will swap the heat and rocks of Mexico for cooler weather and softer gravel surfaces near the city of Cordoba, about 700 km northwest of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires. Suzuki will also be hoping for a change in fortunes following a premature end to the Rally Mexico, in which P-G Andersson ran as high as sixth overall. His team mate Toni Gardemeister notched up his 100th rally in Mexico, and in Argentina the Finn celebrates another important anniversary: his 33rd birthday that takes place the day after the rally. Argentina is one of the most spectacular events of the season, featuring dramatic stages at high altitudes and stunning scenery - including several crests and watersplashes. The weather in the southern hemisphere at this time of year is autumnal, so rain, mist and fog are a strong possibility. The surfaces can be soft and sandy, testing traction and grip to the utmost. As was the case in Mexico, the high altitudes will also sap up to 25% of the power from the engines on classic mountain stages such as Giulio Cesare and El Condor. With its lunar landscapes and enthusiastic local crowd, Argentina is a real highlight of the World Rally Championship. There is a brand new spectator superspecial for this year at Cordoba stadium, which concludes each day of the rally. In total, the action consists of 21 special stages comprising 347.91 competitive kilometres.

Car news - Suzuki SX4 WRC n.11 (Gardemeister) and n.12 (Andersson):
Rally Argentina presents several unique challenges, and the Suzuki SX4 WRC has been carefully adapted to rise to the occasion. The characteristic watersplashes that punctuate the route can damage the car and drown the engine, so the SX4 WRC's front bodywork has been specially modified in order to prevent this happening by dispersing the water more quickly and effectively. The engines have also been modified in order to increase reliability and durability in the tough conditions. Suzuki has only one previous outing in Argentina, on the Junior World Rally Championship in 2006 with the Swift. On that occasion, the car won the class - but competing with a cutting-edge World Rally Car is a very different proposition. Although the surfaces are mostly soft, there is a lot of variation in the amount of grip available. As Suzuki has no previous experience of running with a World Rally Car in Argentina, the event shakedown will be a vital opportunity to establish settings for a wide range of different conditions. Under the latest tyre rules, Suzuki (along with all the other manufacturers) will use Pirelli's new hard compound Scorpion tyre in Argentina - but in the cool conditions it may prove tricky to generate enough heat in the rubber during some stages.

Driver news:
Toni Gardemeister has some previous experience of the Rally Argentina, having competed on the rally four times with a best result of fourth in 2005. However, he has not been to Argentina since then - although the Finn has always enjoyed a good feeling with the fast and flowing stages.
After scoring a point for Suzuki on the Swedish Rally last month, Gardemeister aims to increase his total over the rolling pampas of Argentina.
"I have been feeling quite ill the week before the event, so it's not been a perfect start," said Gardemeister. "However, I like Argentina very much and I'm looking forward to going back there after a two-year gap. Many of the stages are quite similar, so I'm hoping that this will not be too much of a disadvantage. There are lots of things that can catch people out, so by driving carefully and keeping out of trouble there's a very good chance of scoring some useful points. Reliability is going to be the key, and there could be some surprises from the weather as well."
Since the start of the season P-G Andersson has demonstrated that he is more than capable of keeping pace with the frontrunners, despite the fact that Argentina will only be the young Swede's fourth rally in a World Rally Car. When he retired from Mexico he was running sixth overall, and P-G's aim is to continue where he left off.

"That's the plan," he said. "I've only been to Argentina once before, in 2005, so this will be another very big learning experience for me - although I'm getting used to that now. The surfaces are quite specialised, so one of our biggest challenges will be to adapt the car to them quickly. The other big challenge will be staying on the road, as it is a very fast and slippery event in places!"
Team news:
Having investigated the engine problems in Mexico, the entire Suzuki team is determined to bounce back and continue the run of success that saw it score points on every round of the championship up until then.
The Suzuki World Rally Team's equipment has been transported from Mexico to Argentina in the three weeks since the last event, and new engines have already been sent from Japan.
Another new arrival in the squad is Paul Wilding, who becomes team manager. Having managed Suzuki's Junior World Championship campaign in recent years, the Australian is a familiar face with plenty of experience in the role.

Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima, Suzuki's team principal, said: "Argentina is renowned as a very tough event, where the soft ground can often hide some big stones. Since Mexico we have improved the reliability of the engine, so we are aiming to get to the finish in Argentina in order to learn more about the car and what is needed to achieve success at the highest level. The priority for both drivers is to get to the end: if we can score some points as well it would be a very welcome bonus."

Вчерашние новости с официального сайта FIA Wopld Rally Championship (WRC) : http://www.wrc.com/jsp/index.jsp?lnk=101&id=708&desc=WRC rule changes welcomed by Suzuki

27/3/08

WRC rule changes welcomed by Suzuki
A decision by the FIA to relax some technical regulations for new manufacturers in the WRC has been given the thumbs up by the boss of the Suzuki World Rally Team.

At the most recent World Motor Sport Council meeting, the FIA decided to ease certain parts restrictions for manufacturers in their first year of entering the championship.

Instead of having to stick rigidly to the rules concerning engine pairing and the supply of spares like transmissions, steering racks and sub-frames, new teams may ask the FIA for a waiver to use two additional engines without penalty, and change other parts according to the sporting regulations.

Suzuki World Rally Team principal Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima had been critical of the original regulations which he felt placed too many technical restrictions on new manufacturers. As boss of the newest manufacturer team in the series, Tajima said rules concerning the repeated use of certain components made it difficult to improve a car in the early stages of its development.

But Tajima said that the revised regulations would be beneficial to his team and other new manufacturers in the future.

”We are very, very happy because they [the FIA] understood the opinion of a new manufacturer, said Tajima. ”Of course in a perfect world we would like even more freedom, but the regulations are already here and we don’t want to destroy them altogether. We want to follow them like the other teams - this is motorsport, after all. But the decision to modify them a little for new manufacturers is a good one, and will help us to develop our car and build experience. That’s very important for a new team and I’m sure other new manufacturers will welcome the regulation as a good help.”

Mixed fortunes for Suzuki in Argentina

The Suzuki World Rally Team has had a day of mixed fortunes on the opening leg of the Rally Argentina, round four of the World Rally Championship. Young Swede P-G Andersson was forced to retire just four kilometres from the opening stage, as a result of a boost pressure sensor failure. By contrast, Toni Gardemeister enjoyed a reliable run to place his SX4 WRC within the point-scoring positions for the bulk of the day. Unfortunately, during the very last proper stage, he could not avoid hitting a rock on the racing line - which led to his retirement from the leg.
Conditions on the Rally Argentina were atrocious in the morning, with heavy rain, thick fog and plenty of mud on the road. As more cars passed through the stages the surfaces broke up, making life extremely difficult for Gardemeister, who started 10th on the road.

Car news - Suzuki SX4 WRC n.11 (Gardemeister), n.12 (Andersson):
Suzuki has never tested in Argentina with the World Rally Car previously, so the opening day was a chance for the team to get to grips with the extremely tricky conditions.
Gardemeister refined some suspension settings at midday service in order to improve the handling on the soft stages, and he lost a bit of time in the morning as a broken exhaust prevented him from hearing his pace notes properly.
In the afternoon he felt more confident in slightly better conditions, and climbed to a solid seventh place overall before hitting the rock 10 kilometres into SS8. The impact broke the front suspension, and Toni was not able to complete the stage.
Nonetheless, he will re-start tomorrow under the Super Rally system, with a 10-minute penalty for not completing two stages. He still retains 14th place overall, and is currently only two and a half minutes off the top 10.
P-G will also re-start tomorrow in order to continue Suzuki's all-important testing programme and learn as much as possible about these specialised gravel roads. The faulty sensor - a minor but crucial component - was rapidly fixed, and his SX4 WRC will be at full health tomorrow.

Driver news:
Toni Gardemeister: "Both myself and P-G have actually been very unlucky on this event. In my case I saw a big rock right on the racing line, which is unusual, and I could not help hitting it. Without that problem we would have got to the end of the day safely in seventh, with some good chances of finishing in the top six. Everything is not yet lost though, and we can still come back and achieve something from this event. The conditions today were as difficult as I have ever known them: the surfaces were really slippery and we were struggling for grip all the time. It could be the same again tomorrow, so we have to just try and stay out of trouble and move up the order as best as we can."

P-G Andersson: "Actually what halted us was a very trivial problem, but it meant that we could not do any of the stages today and that was very frustrating. Having said that, I have already drawn a line under today: my rally starts tomorrow. The most important thing now is for me to have time in the car and by the end of the rally I hope we will have achieved that and learned some useful things. It's good that the weather is so bad: it means that we can test the car under extreme conditions."

Team news:
Nobuhiro Tajima, Suzuki World Rally Team principal: "We knew from the very beginning that this was going to be a tough rally, and this has proved to be the case. Sometimes you learn lessons the hard way. At least now we are in a position to re-start with both cars tomorrow and continue to increase our knowledge of this event and these very difficult conditions. Toni proved that we had the pace to run comfortably within the points places today under extremely tricky circumstances: now we have to build on this base in order to improve the performance and the reliability. There is still a long way to go, and there are many opportunities ahead of us."

Suzuki climbs tricky learning curve in Argentina

It has been another tough day for the Suzuki World Rally Team in Argentina, the fourth round of this year's World Rally Championship. The mud of the opening day continued to characterise the second leg of the all-gravel event, putting traction and grip at a premium in the slippery conditions.
Both Suzuki SX4 WRCs re-started day two under the super rally system, with P-G Andersson setting times within the top 10 throughout most of the day. Unfortunately, his consistent run was halted by a suspension breakage on the rough surfaces of SS14.
Toni Gardemeister had an assortment of different problems throughout the day: in the morning he had only two-wheel drive, while a hydraulic glitch deprived him of the centre differential, semi-automatic gearshift and power steering during the afternoon. He chose to retire after SS15 in order to re-join the final day under the super rally system and be sure of reaching the finish of the event.

Car news - Suzuki SX4 WRC n.11 (Gardemeister), n.12 (Andersson):
Suzuki continued to climb a steep learning curve in Argentina, on the occasion of the team's first visit to the event with the SX4 WRC. Nonetheless, Andersson had a trouble-free run throughout the morning stages to indicate that the engine problems suffered by the team in Mexico appear to have been resolved. On the final stage of the morning the Swede damaged his car's steering against a stone, but this did not cost him much time. However, the Rally Argentina's rough terrain eventually forced his retirement from the second day on SS14 in the afternoon.
Toni Gardemeister had to battle with drivetrain and hydraulic problems, but the aim is for both cars to re-join the event under the super rally system tomorrow in order to complete as many test kilometres as possible.
The savage conditions of Argentina have taken their toll on the entire field, with several of the top runners forced onto the sidelines.

Driver news:
Toni Gardemeister: "We've not had an easy run of things today. We were just a few hundred metres into the first stage this morning when we lost drive at the front. We obviously then lost a lot of time as we had only two-wheel drive. That problem was fixed at service, but next we had another issue with the hydraulic system. We have to remember that this is just the fourth rally of our first full season with the SX4 WRC, so it's normal to expect a few problems. The important thing is just to try and fix them and move on. Hopefully we can have a good day tomorrow, and show a little bit more of our potential."

P-G Andersson: "Conditions have been extremely tough throughout this rally: it's probably the biggest challenge of the year we have faced so far. I enjoyed the morning stages: we had no real problems with the car, although I am feeling my inexperience a little bit. The roads were even rougher on the second passage through the stages in the afternoon, and unfortunately we broke the suspension. That's life, but we'll start again tomorrow with the aim of learning as much as possible."

Team news:
Nobuhiro Tajima, Suzuki World Rally Team principal: "This has been a very hard day for us. I feel very sorry for both drivers. Hopefully we can get everything fixed to ensure that they have a trouble-free day tomorrow. It is bad luck for Toni and P-G: with the conditions as rough as they are, he is one of many drivers that have retired with suspension breakages. We need to cover as many kilometres as possible, so we want to send both cars out under the super rally system tomorrow. It is only by fixing all the problems as they arise that we will improve. Of course the road to success is a difficult and challenging one - but we already knew that before we embarked on our first full season this year."

The SX4 WRC of P-G Andersson has scored a manufacturers’ point for Suzuki after an extremely challenging event featuring some of the worst conditions in recent memory. Just three stages made up the final day, but two of them were the most legendary and difficult of the whole event: Giulio Cesare and El Condor. These two stages reach an altitude of more than 2000 metres through the foothills of the Andes.

There is often dense fog, and huge rocks that can catch out the unwary. In these challenging conditions, P-G Andersson set an eighth-fastest time – beating many more experienced competitors and hinting at the potential of the SX4 WRC on a clean run with no problems. The Swede’s visibility was hampered through the El Condor stage as his windscreen misted up in the damp conditions, but he eventually finished the rally to score a precious manufacturers’ point for Suzuki.

Toni Gardemeister re-started the final day in order to rack up some test kilometres, but unfortunately was not able to make the finish.

This year’s Rally Argentina – which took place in the southern hemisphere’s early autumn – presented the crews with an unprecedented range of weather conditions, meaning that only eight of the original 14 World Rally Car starters made the finish.

Car news – Suzuki SX4 WRC n.11 (Gardemeister), n.12 (Andersson):

Both drivers experimented with set-ups on the soft and wet stages, concentrating on learning as much as possible for the future. The first day of Andersson's rally was halted by a turbo boost pressure sensor failure, while a suspension breakage stopped his consistent run on day two. He got to the end of the final day with no major problems.

Gardemeister had a reliable run on the opening day before hitting a rock that was on the racing line in the afternoon. He re-joined for day two but was held back by a combination of hydraulic and electronic problems that prevented him from completing the leg. The Finn managed to complete most of the stages over the three days of the rally and has acquired some valuable information to help the SX4 WRC's development.

The Suzuki SX4 WRCs arrived in Argentina with some bodywork modifications to cope with the watersplashes, as well as a revised head gasket. Both of these evolutions worked successfully, and the team was able to continue its testing programme on what is still only the fourth event of the SX4 WRC's first full season.

Driver news:

P-G Andersson: “I’m pleased to get to the end of what has been a very tough rally for us. I’m also pleased that we have scored a manufacturers’ point for Suzuki, although I would have been even happier if we had been able to score some drivers’ points for ourselves as well! We had a good solid run through the Giulio Cesare stage this morning, without pushing too hard, and that indicates the sort of thing we can do when everything is working well. We just have to treat the problems we have experienced here as opportunities to improve and move on. Now we will be working hard in preparation for the next event, Jordan, which is brand new. Nobody starts with an advantage in terms of experience there, so I hope we can do well.”

Toni Gardemeister: “We’ve had a few problems on this event, but the conditions have been even tougher than we expected. The surfaces were extremely slippery, and it was very easy to make a mistake. We just tried to keep the car on the road as much as possible and get to the end. Unfortunately we weren’t quite able to manage that, but we learnt several important lessons along the way and we have a very clear idea of the areas in which we can improve.”

Team news:

Nobuhiro Tajima, Suzuki World Rally Team principal: “It's clear that we have a lot of work still ahead of us, and although we are very disappointed we have also been quite unlucky here. The boost pressure sensor that stopped P-G on the opening day is a very small component, and it was very unusual for Toni to find a rock that was right on the racing line. We seem to have solved some of the reliability issues that have affected us in the past, but we need to keep working hard in order to solve all the issues we encounter. Only when we have achieved this will we be able to reach our eventual target of competing regularly amongst the frontrunners.”

Suzuki SX4 WRC gets underway in Jordan

The Suzuki World Rally Team started the first ever World Rally Championship round in Jordan this evening, when Toni Gardemeister and P-G Andersson drove their Suzuki SX4 WRCs over the ceremonial startline in the Dead Sea area of Jordan, south-west of the nation's capital, Amman.
Both drivers arrive on Jordan Rally with high hopes of taking points from this historic event. They are both aware, however, of the challenge which lies ahead. The drivers will be faced with 22 arduous gravel stages before they reach the finish on Sunday afternoon. And, unusually for this time of the year in Jordan, they will be competing in some of the hottest temperatures of the season. Today's shakedown test was completed with temperatures heading towards 40 degrees. These conditions are expected for the first two days of competition, before the temperature falls to around 25 degrees on Sunday. Sunday promises a real sting in the tail, with two runs of Jordan River - at 41.45km the longest stage of the event - in one of the toughest final days in recent World Rally Championship history.
Car news - Suzuki SX4 WRC n.11 (Gardemeister), n.12 (Andersson):
Never having competed in the Middle East before, Toni Gardemeister and P-G Andersson were both keen to get into the 2.5km shakedown stage, located just north of the service park on the banks of the Dead Sea. Both cars completed their final test before the start without any problems, with Gardemeister and Andersson using the time to conclude their set-up for this fifth round of the World Rally Championship.
Following a successful test at shakedown, both cars went through their final preparation procedure before they were taken up the road to the ceremonial start on the banks of the Dead Sea. Following the start, the two Suzuki SX4 WRCs were locked into parc ferme for the night before the start of the competitive action in the morning.

Driver news:
Toni Gardemeister: "This is something new for me - I've never rallied in these kind of conditions before. The recce showed how precise we are going to have to be on these roads. There are some big rocks right at the side of the stage, rocks which could end the rally. Having said that, in some places you can go 100 metres off the line of the corner and not hit anything, then in the next bend, you couldn't go 10cm too wide without hitting a very big rock. The blind crests are going to be very interesting. You think it's going to be straight after the crest and then there's a square corner right ahead of you - it's very hard to read these roads. I start this event chasing points. I am confident this is possible. Equally, I think this will be an event with plenty of incidents. It's certainly going to be an exciting rally."

P-G Andersson: "The shakedown was good this morning. The team did some work with the transmission, which will help on the rally. I was also pleased with the handling of the car at shakedown. We have made some adjustments to the car and they've worked well. The shakedown road itself wasn't all that representative of the stages to come, so we can't really draw too many conclusions about what to expect, but I'm feeling positive and looking forward to the challenge of this new rally in Jordan. One thing is for sure, the stages will be fast and very tricky in places. On some of the long straights, it's really hard to pick out the road - everything looks grey and with very little definition."

Team news:
Paul Wilding, Suzuki World Rally Team manager: "This has the look of an extremely difficult event. And the weather is going to make it even tougher with temperatures of 40 degrees plus. The recce went very well for us and the drivers are reporting that the stages look nice, with some really fast and hard-packed roads. We are looking forward to this rally and we have prepared well. We have shown that we can be competitive on stages and that's what we want in Jordan. At the same time, we can learn about the set-up of the car in preparation for the next three rallies to come in Sardinia, Greece and Turkey."

Tricky start for Suzuki in Jordan

In a day of searing heat alongside the Dead Sea, the Suzuki World Rally Team had a challenging start to the first ever World Rally Championship round in Jordan. Finland's Toni Gardemeister ended the opening test inside the top 10 positions and in a confident mood. Unfortunately for Suzuki, his team-mate P-G Andersson slipped off the road six kilometers into the Suwayma stage, undamaging his car but ending his participation in day one of the Jordan Rally. Andersson will return tomorrow, under the super rally regulations, with his SX4 WRC running again in perfect condition. Gardemeister remained in the top 10 for the next test, but was forced out of the rally after five kilometres of the third stage with a damaged sump.

Car news - Suzuki SX4 WRC n.11 (Gardemeister), n.12 (Andersson):
The engine in Gardemeister's SX4 WRC suffered sufficient damage when a rock hit the sump, that running on the second day was not possible. Such were the rough conditions on the Middle Eastern roads, the Finn couldn't even remember where the impact had happened. Andersson's car was completely undamaged when it went off the road. The Swede actually managed to get the car back on the road himself, having located some pieces of wood to place under the wheels, allowing the car to reverse out of the ditch it had landed in. Unfortunately for the double Junior Rally Champion, he reached the end of the first stage out of time and was unable to continue in day one.

Driver news:
Toni Gardemeister: "I was happy with the first couple of stages. In some corners, we were going a little bit wide, but the times were quite okay. I thought this was going to be a good event for us. We had a real chance to get some good points here. I knew P-G had had a problem and I was thinking that we needed to make sure there was one SX4 at the finish, so I wasn't pushing very hard. I wasn't flat-out and didn't want to take the big risks. I don't know which stone it was that caused the problems - there were so many of them about! As soon as I heard the engine starting to sound like it wasn't right in SS3, I pulled over and switched it off. I am also upset for the team because I wanted to get a result for them on this rally. I came here to drive well and to compete with the other cars on even ground. I do believe we could have made a result, particularly when you look at how many of the cars are having problems in these really tough conditions."

P-G Andersson: "My problem came in a section about six kilometres into the stage. It was a left-hander going into a tighter right. I was too fast into the left and then couldn't gather the car for the next right. The car started to drift and then went off the road on the inside of the corner. The front was buried in some deep sand. A couple of people were there to help, but there was no way the car was coming out until I found some wood to go under the wheels. By the time I had done that and we got back on the road, we were OTL (Over Time Limit). I had a slow puncture from earlier in the stage, but the problem was my speed - not the tyre. It's really disappointing. I need to be in the car and driving stages right now, so there is a lot of frustration when this happens. We all want to show what the SX4 WRC can do."

Team news:
Paul Wilding, Suzuki World Rally Team manager: "Toni's problem was unfortunate. It's very unlucky for the rock to hit precisely the wrong part of the bottom of the car and to cause a problem like this. But this has happened to Toni and cost him and the team dearly. We all feel for Toni and Tomi - they had made good times on the first two stages. This is the drivers' first time on this event, it's not like they have many years of pace notes to start with as a reference. Instead they made notes for the first time. P-G seems to have been caught out by the difference in the recce and rally speed and the unknown factor of what the surface could do. Many of the other drivers have returned to the service park with similar stories. I think it's just unfortunate that P-G has been caught out by this, and both P-G and the team have paid a heavy price. His SX4 WRC was undamaged in the incident and is running perfectly, so he will be ready to re-start tomorrow."

По новым правилам у всех стоит одна и та же.

"For the first time, this year's World Rally Championship runs on control tyres supplied by Pirelli and the desert of Jordan also joins the series"
